Happy EDD to me!


How far along? 40 weeks

How big is baby? About 7 1/2 pounds, 20 inches

Total weight gain: Still about 20-22 pounds. I think my body kind of maxes out around 150 pounds. I gained like 40 pounds with Adelaide, kept 10. 30 pounds with Augie, kept 10. I don’t need to keep 10 this time, though ; )

Sleep: Besides my first day of maternity leave, sleep has been pretty good. I find that I sleep better when I wear my mouth guard, which makes me think I’m a little stressed and probably grinding my teeth. I’ve been trying to take it easy, though, and take naps whenever possible just in case labor starts at night (which it did for both Adelaide and August).

Best moment this week: Just being off work and sleeping in has been nice.

Movement: I started doing kick counts just to make sure she’s doing OK. She usually moves 10 times within 20 minutes, so I’d say that’s pretty good. (You’re supposed to get 10 movements in under two hours.)

Food cravings: Chips and salsa, maybe? Chai tea is a new one this week.

Labor Signs: Still having contractions, but not consistently.

What I miss: My midwife.

What I am looking forward to: Having a baby.

Upcoming appointments/events:  Not really sure at this point. My next appointment is scheduled for a week from Monday, because my doctor is out all next week. But I hope and assume I will have a baby before then.

Things to buy: I got bengkung fabric! We got paint! I never did buy those swaddle blankets. Maybe later.

On my to-do list: Sew the bengkung wrap, finish my niece’s onesie, finish cleaning the ceiling, paint the trim, have a baby.

Anything else? I’m just so fed up with my doctor. I’m glad to know he will most likely not be attending my birth. I liked him fine up until a couple of weeks ago, when he started pressuring me to have this baby before he left on vacation. No, doc, I’m not going to induce just so you can deliver this baby, especially considering we have likely spent less than an hour in the same room together over the entire length of this pregnancy.

Baby weather

It looks like this baby’s birthday is not September 11th, and I am very OK with that.

But it does look like we will be having a baby on a ridiculously hot day.


(A few hours later, they updated Tuesday’s temperature to 108 degrees.)

39 Weeks


How far along? 39 Weeks

How big is baby? About 7 pounds, 20 inches

Total weight gain: Still about 20-22 pounds.

Sleep: I didn’t get a lot of sleep this week during my last week of work. I was trying to get so much done, and I’d end up staying up really late and getting up early. I’ve had my share of 5- and 6-hour nights lately. But now…sweet maternity leave…right after I finish one more blog…and write another email or two…

Best moment this week: My coworkers gave me a surprise baby shower! That was pretty sweet. I didn’t have any 0-6 month clothes for baby girl, and now I do! And a few gift cards, to boot. I wasn’t expecting any sort of shower for my third, so it was a true surprise and a treat. Plus there were bagels and fruit! I think bagels and fruit are pregnant lady staples.

We got curtains for our living room, which I find very exciting. Kyle did music for a video for childhood cancer awareness month for St. Baldrick’s, which turned out well. And I’m planning a birthday party for Adelaide and August, which is sort of fun. I don’t consider myself much of a party planner, but this just might come together.

Movement: She’s still moving, so that’s a good sign.

Food cravings: I am over my scone and popsicle cravings, but they haven’t been replaced by other desires. I made cinnamon rolls, which are always delicious.

Food Aversions: None that come to mind. I’ve had a lot of heartburn lately, so that’s not fun, but it’s not like there’s a certain trigger food that I know of.

Labor Signs: I had an hour of mild contractions a few nights ago. Occasionally I will get a contraction that I have to relax through. Nothing steady yet. I am feeling the nesting urge to clean and get things ready, so that’s nice. It’s a very motivating feeling, and I feel quite satisfied with everything I accomplish.

What I miss: Sleeping on my back and stomach. Wearing normal clothes.

What I am looking forward to: I found a book I want to read called Natural Hospital Birth. I read the first few chapters online, and it’s at a library a few miles from here, so I’m going to pick it up. I’m looking forward to (hopefully) having a few days off to catch up on sleep before baby arrives, now that I’m not at work.

Upcoming appointments/events:  I’m on weekly appointments, now. I told the doctor that I don’t want pelvic exams, and he was OK with that and told me to remind him later. So on this last visit, I reminded him, and he said, “OK, but I want to do one next time.” Seriously? “Um, no thank you,” I said. He just wants to strip my membranes because he’s planned a vacation starting September 14. That’s what I think.

Things to buy: Sometime in the next couple of weeks I want to buy some fabric to make a bengkung belly wrap thingy. And I wanted to see if I could find the right fabric for making swaddle blankets, but they closed our local JoAnn Fabrics. Now there’s just Walmart. (Apparently there is a JoAnn in Covina, which is less than 8 miles away…so why does Covina seem so far away??)

On my to-do list: It would be nice to paint the trim in the house, but I don’t know that I’ll get to it. I need to finish the onesie I made for my newborn niece, who is no longer a newborn.

Anything else? I’m trying to get pumped about this birth, but I’m having a hard time envisioning a peaceful experience. I found out I’m strep B positive, which means they’ll want me to have antibiotics during labor. Chances are the baby would be fine without antibiotics (99.5%). Chances are better with antibiotics (99.97%). But if I have another fast labor, there won’t be time. (You’re supposed to get the antibiotics at least four hours before birth. Augie was born in two and a half hours.) If I don’t get the full course, or if I decline altogether, they’ll be paranoid about the baby, and they will probably want me to stay an extra night or two for observation.

I don’t want to have to stand up for myself during labor. I don’t want to have to fight to keep the baby with me, request to wait to cut the cord, or ask them to chill out and let the placenta come on its own — all things that a midwife knows to do instinctively. I don’t want them to whisk the baby away like it’s their baby, like they did with Adelaide. But that’s what I signed up for when I decided to save money on insurance this year, right? (Sigh.)

Maybe it’s all for good reason that I’m in the hospital this time, and I’ll be so thankful. Hopefully this library book will help me get into a better mindset today.

36 Weeks

How far along? 36 Weeks

How big is baby? About 6 pounds, 18-1/2 inches

Total weight gain: Still about 20-22 pounds.

Sleep: Sleep has been better, although slightly more uncomfortable. I find myself stealing Kyle’s smushy pillows sometimes.

Best moment this week: Every day around midnight, when I finally get into bed and it’s cooler than 90 degrees.

Movement: More movement this week. Sometimes I feel hiccups down low, and sometimes I feel them up high. Not sure what that means about her position, but I trust that she will be in the right place at the right time. I hope she will take after her siblings that way.

Food cravings: Blueberry scones. And popsicles, because the Dreyer’s Outshine natural popsicles I bought were disappointing. So then I got the good-ol’ Popsicle brand cherry, grape, and orange, but those were a letdown, too. Popsicles just aren’t as good as I remember them, I guess. Maybe I’ll try Trader Joe’s Fruit Floes and see if those hit the spot.

Food Aversions: Black tea. I usually have a cup of Constant Comment at work after breakfast. I’ve been wanting coffee more than tea for the past week or two, so I was already feeling tea-averse. But I’ve been sticking to my guns and avoiding morning coffee since I’ve been off of it for more than a year now (although I do have after-work coffee on a pretty regular basis). Alas, the last two times I’ve had hot tea, I felt nauseated until lunch. So no more tea for now.

Labor Signs: Feeling tired and irritable, but no real labor signs. I’m eating dates, which will supposedly help me go into labor on time and give me a shorter labor. I know it’s true, because they did a study on it. (Small sample size, but there are worse things than eating dates, right?) I hope it works, because I’m getting tired of dates, and it’s only been a week. Maybe that is what drives the baby out: date fatigue.

What I miss: Agility. That’s pretty much the same thing I said last time, isn’t it? Yesterday I did a bunch of cleaning, and it’s just so hard now to change the sheets (our bed has a loft over it, which makes it a bit trickier) or scrub the bathtub or clean the floors (especially since I insist on doing it Cinderalla style instead of using a sponge mop. I like to get down with the dirt.)

What I am looking forward to: Getting things wrapped up at work so I can feel good about going on maternity leave.

Upcoming appointments/events:  I have an appointment sometime this week. I should probably call and find out when that is. I also need to pre-register at the hospital. And I would kind of like to do the hospital tour, but kids aren’t allowed, and I’m not sure who could watch them, so I’ll probably pass. I mean, I don’t know that a tour would change anything, except maybe I could visualize the birth a little better if I saw the kind of room I’ll be in. Oh wait, they have a virtual tour online. Tour complete!

Things to buy: We are on a spending moratorium, so I’m not going to think about buying things this week.

On my to-do list: Get the infant car seat cleaned up and install it.

Anything else? People ask if we have a name yet. We don’t.

34 Weeks

We’re heading into the home stretch, so I thought I’d make a some small attempt at documenting this pregnancy in the final weeks.

How far along? 34 Weeks

How big is baby? About 4.75 pounds, 18 inches

Total weight gain/loss: About 20 pounds. Doctor said I will not have a nine pound baby this time “unless she’s hiding somewhere.”

Sleep: I am a pretty good sleeper, thankfully. I have had a few episodes of insomnia around 4 or 5 in the morning.

Best moment this week: When the French smoker lady from the second floor at work said how beautiful our kids are. She’s sweet.

Movement: She used to move a lot more. Pretty quiet at the moment, but she gets active sometimes.

Food cravings: I could go for a lime popsicle or a creamsicle or something like that. But that’s more about heat than pregnancy. Olives have been my main food craving this time.

Food Aversions: Thinking…thinking…food aversions…none I can think of…

Labor Signs: The occasional uncomfortable contraction, but really nothing.

What I miss: Being able to move easily. It’s hard to walk fast, and forget about running. It hurts to sit for a long time, or walk, or stand, or lay down. Have to change it up to stay comfortable.

What I am looking forward to: Going to Sacramento to spend a few days with Kyle’s parents and their pool. I finally got a maternity swimsuit!

Upcoming appointments/events:  I saw Dr. Speedy yesterday for a 2-minute appointment, and everything was good. I’ll see him again in two weeks.

Things to buy: I’m still deciding between cloth and disposable diapers. I have newborn cloth diapers from Augie, so I’ll probably start with cloth. But we’re in a drought, and I don’t need more laundry, so I might go with disposable after she grows out of the newborn diapers. But the thought of throwing away diapers every day is painful. So much waste.

We don’t have much to buy this time. I’ll need to pick up a Playtex drop-in bottle at some point. And I would like to get these swaddle blankets, which are just silly expensive muslin, but everyone seems to love them. This one on Etsy is cute, too (but somehow more expensive??).

On my to-do list: I’d like to paint the trim in the house before baby arrives.

Anything else? Overall, this has been a pretty easy pregnancy. I don’t have the blurry vision or rib stretching pain I had with Adelaide. I don’t have the painful hips I had with Augie. And I don’t think I’ve been as emotional as I was with either of them (although I have had a couple of weepy moments, as Kyle can attest).

(EDIT: Since writing this paragraph, I have experienced both rib-stretching pain and hip pain. But maybe not as bad as with Adelaide and Augie. Definitely my hips are not as painful, because I couldn’t even roll over in bed with Augie.)

Mostly, I’ve just been tired. I don’t have as much of a nesting urge as I had with Adelaide or Augie. Some compulsive cleaning, but I don’t have the itch to do sewing projects yet. In fact, I have a baby gift for my sister-in-law that has been sitting unfinished for weeks and weeks. No knitting projects, either. I kind of wish I had started something…I suppose it’s not too late…
